Unsaturated structured soils: constitutive modelling and stability analyses

Abstract The paper presents a new single-surface elasto-plastic model for unsaturated cemented soils, formulated within the critical state soil mechanics framework, which should be considered as an extension to conditions of recently proposed constitutive law saturated structured soils. has been developed with main purpose inspecting mechanical instabilities induced in natural soils by bond degradation resulting from accumulation plastic strains and/or changes pore saturation. At this scope, equations are used simulate typical geotechnical testing conditions, whose results then analysed light controllability theory. triaxial tests on ideal fully and corresponding uncemented one first discussed, aiming at detecting evidence potentially unstable throughout numerical simulations. This is followed similar analyses considering combined effects both above features. For each case, simple analytical stability criterion validated against results, generalizing highlighting crucial role variables parameters possible occurrence failure conditions.
